lyrics by lisa ganser. this song is dedicated to Kat Espinosa (mother of Asa Sullivan) and Mesha Irizarry (mother of Idriss Stelley), whose sons were both killed by SFPD. the line "stars out, guns drawn" is a quote from Michelle Alvis, the first officer to begin shooting Asa Sullivan on June 6, 2006. Alvis was describing how she and the other officers entered Asa's home.
lyrics
stars out, looking up and feeling the energy
stars out, surrender, no need for resisting
stars out, powerful and striking, first one shines so brightly
stars out, quickly see a second one, followed by the third one
stars out, filling up the whole room, brightness of the full moon
home is where the heart is,
and this is the hardest thing i've ever had to sing
red rover red rover, i'm completely whelmed over
i went out of my way to get the violent eyes locked right up with mine
and the fist raised up, and i readied to take a punch
i deserve, we all deserve, you deserve
to be loved and nurtured
is this home or just a place?
i believe it's something...
stars out, looking up and feeling the energy
stars out, surrender to the energy, stop resisting
stars out, powerful and striking, first one shines so brightly
stars out, quickly see a second one, followed by the third one
stars out, filling up the whole room, brightness of the full moon
when i met your mom,
she told me how you are so intelligent and frail,
the most resilient young black male that she's ever known
brilliant and defiant, long before you were ever grown
bravest authenticity, loved incredibly
when i met your mom,
i saw your smile in photographs, heard about your laugh
sat in on the trial of your wrongful death
saw your face after your final breath
on the courtroom's big flat screens
hair braided so lovingly
blood splattered on your face
was it your home or just a place?
i believe in something...
stars out, guns drawn
looking up and feeling the energy
stars out, guns drawn
stop resisting, stop resisting
stars out, guns drawn
powerful and striking, first one shines so brightly
stars out, guns drawn
quickly see a second one, followed by the third one
stars out, guns drawn
filling up the whole room, brightness of the full moon
i deserve, we all deserve, you deserve
to be loved and nurtured
stars out, looking up and feeling the energy
stars out, surrender, no need for resisting
stars out, powerful and striking, first one shines so brightly
stars out, quickly see a second one, followed by the third one
stars out, filling up the whole room, brightness of the full moon
stars out
